RunWay vs Nike Run Club

Both are free to download and put a coach in your ears. One plays Guided Runs recorded by Nike coaches; the other writes every cue from your own run, live.

Facts checked on October 23, 2026, from the sources at the bottom of this page. We make RunWay, so we’ve kept to verifiable facts; if something has changed, email dorich@icloud.com and we’ll update it.

Nike Run Club (NRC) is one of the best-known free running apps, and many runners met audio coaching through its Guided Runs. If you’re looking for a Nike Run Club alternative, here’s an honest look at what each app does, where NRC is strong, and where RunWay takes a different approach.

Where Nike Run Club shines

  • It’s free. NRC is free on the App Store, with Guided Runs and training plans included for Nike Members.
  • Guided Runs with real people. Nike says the app has around 300 audio Guided Runs. They’re recorded by NRC coaches and athletes; the App Store listing highlights Coach Bennett and Eliud Kipchoge. Hearing a human coach, or an Olympic champion, talk you through a run is a real motivator.
  • Everywhere you are. NRC runs on iPhone and Android, has an Apple Watch app, syncs with Garmin and COROS watches, and uploads to Strava.
  • Community. Challenges, and since late 2024, live location sharing with friends and family during a run, plus pre-run local weather tips.

Where RunWay is different

A coach that reacts to your run

Guided Runs are recorded in advance, so the coach’s words are the same for everyone who plays that run. RunWay writes its cues from your numbers in the moment: your split at each kilometer, a heads-up when your pace drifts from the target or your heart rate climbs out of zone, and encouragement when you need it. Your music dips under the voice, then comes back. See how the AI voice coach works.

It answers you

Hold the mic button and ask, “Can I hold this pace?” RunWay answers from your live data, in your ears, without you stopping or looking at the screen.

A plan that reads your readiness

RunWay’s plans for a first 5K, 10K, half or marathon are built from your recent runs or goal time, and adapt each day to your sleep, HRV and resting heart rate in Apple Health. Missed a workout or low on energy? The plan adjusts. It also covers trail and ultra races from 5 to over 200 km with elevation gain, which isn’t among NRC’s six plans. More in training plans that adapt.

Intervals, routes and racing

Guided intervals count you into each rep and keep you on pace. Suggested routes come with voice turn-by-turn and GPX export and import. Pacer mode holds your goal time to the second, and you can race your own past run or record with the live gap in your ears.

Where RunWay falls short

RunWay is iPhone only, with no Android version and no Apple Watch app yet. It has no feed, clubs or challenges: it focuses on coaching, with shareable stories after each run. And its coach voice is generated, not a famous athlete.

Price

Nike Run Club is free.

RunWay is also a free download, with no subscription and no ads. The coach always talks to you with built-in phrases and the iPhone voice, for free, even offline. The AI coach, with lines written for your run and natural voices, uses coaching time: you get free hours when you sign up, then optional packs of 3, 10 or 30 hours that never expire. The App Store shows the price in your currency.

Which one fits you

  • You love Guided Runs with Nike coaches and athletes: NRC.
  • You’re on Android, or want a watch app: NRC.
  • You want a coach that reacts to your pace and heart rate, and answers questions: RunWay.
  • You want a plan that adapts to your readiness, or you’re training for a trail or ultra: RunWay.

Can you use both?

Yes, on different days. Some runners keep a favorite Guided Run for a recovery jog and use RunWay for the structured sessions of their plan: intervals, tempo runs and long runs. Both apps can save your runs to Apple Health. Just don’t run both at once, or you’ll hear two coaches.

FAQ

Is Nike Run Club really free?

Yes. NRC is free on the App Store, and Nike describes its Guided Runs and training plans as free for Nike Members. RunWay is free too; only the optional AI coaching time is sold in packs, after the free hours you get at sign-up.

Does Nike Run Club still have training plans?

Yes. Nike’s help center lists six plans: Getting Started (4 weeks), Go Beyond (4 weeks), 5K (8 weeks), 10K (8 weeks), Half Marathon (14 weeks) and Marathon (18 weeks). Plans are available in selected countries.

What’s the difference between Guided Runs and a live AI coach?

A Guided Run is a recording: the same audio for every runner. A live coach like RunWay speaks from your own numbers as you run (pace, heart rate, distance, today’s workout) and can answer a question you ask out loud.

Nike Run Club vs Runna: what’s the difference?

NRC is free, with Guided Runs and six plans. Runna is a subscription ($19.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the US) focused on adaptive plans, with audio cues for splits, pace and workout steps. Read our RunWay vs Runna comparison.

Is RunWay available on Android?

Not today. RunWay is an iPhone app (iOS 18 or later). On Android, NRC is a free option.
