RunWay is a running app with a voice coach. This page explains what data the app uses, where it goes and what you control.

In short

  • An account is required (email and password, or “Sign in with Apple”): it backs up your runs, profile and training plan, and keeps your AI coaching time.
  • This data is hosted by Supabase in the European Union (Paris). Only you can see your data.
  • Only with your permission, some data goes through our server to two AI services so the coach can write and speak: Claude (Anthropic) and ElevenLabs.
  • The app is free; AI coaching time is topped up with in-app purchases. Apple processes the payment: we never see your payment details.
  • No ads, no tracking, nothing is sold.
  • You can delete your account and all your data from the app, anytime.

Your account

  • Email and password: your email is used to sign you in and, if you ask, to send you a link to reset your password. Your password is never stored in plain text.
  • Sign in with Apple: we receive an app-specific Apple identifier and, if you choose, your email address (possibly hidden by Apple) and first name.
  • AI coaching time: your balance and how it was used (seconds used, date, type of use) are linked to your account.
  • In-app purchases: when you top up your coaching time, you pay with your Apple Account and Apple processes the payment. We only receive the transaction signed by Apple (transaction identifier, pack purchased, date, test or App Store environment), to credit your account and, if Apple refunds you, take back the matching time. This purchase history is linked to your account. We never receive your name, card or Apple ID.
  • Referrals: your referral code, and the link between your account and the friend’s account that used it (to give each of you 1 hour of AI coaching, once).
  • Device identifier (Apple DeviceCheck): so the welcome gift and referrals can only be used once per iPhone, the app sends our server a DeviceCheck token generated by Apple, which the server presents to Apple. The token contains no personal data, changes every time and can’t identify you; for our app, Apple only keeps two flags about the iPhone (“gift already used”, “referral already used”). We don’t store the token.
  • The account is shared with Boost, another app from the same developer: the same email can be used for both apps. RunWay data stays separate from Boost data.

Data backed up to your account

Everything lives on your iPhone first (the app works offline); a copy is backed up to your account on Supabase servers in the EU (Paris region):

  • Profile: first name, birth year, sex, weight, height, max and resting heart rate, level, goal, weekly target, your shoes (model, brand, mileage); your coach settings (personality, voice, cues); and what your coach remembers about you (a few short notes: pains, constraints, preferences, goals), which you can see, edit or erase in the Coach tab; and any sore spot or pain you report, with its follow-up (body area, intensity from 0 to 10, since when, whether it gets worse when running, swelling or limping, comeback check-ins), which you can update or erase in your plan. It’s only used to adjust your training: the app never makes a diagnosis.
  • Runs: date, GPS route, distance, pace, heart rate, cadence, elevation, calories, time in zones, the coach’s sentences and recap, your effort rating and notes.
  • Training plan: planned and completed workouts (cross-training included), adjustments.

This data is only used to run the app (getting it back on another iPhone or after reinstalling). It is never sold or used for advertising.

Data used on your iPhone

  • Location (GPS): to map your route and measure distance, pace and elevation during a run, including with the screen locked, and to suggest loops from where you are (“Routes for you”). Your usual routes are recognized on your iPhone, from your runs.
  • Motion: cadence and elevation, from the iPhone’s sensors.
  • Apple Health: the app reads your heart rate, HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, VO2 max and past runs to work out your daily readiness, and your cycling, swimming, elliptical, walking or rowing workouts to check off your cross-training sessions (only the sport and duration are kept with the session). It saves your runs to Health if you allow it. Data read from Health is never used for advertising; only your runs (and the heart rate recorded during them) are backed up to your account.
  • Microphone and speech recognition: only while you hold the mic button to ask the coach a question. Transcription happens on the iPhone when possible; audio is not kept.
  • Bluetooth: to connect a heart rate strap, if you have one.
  • Automatic start (Settings › Automatic start, off by default): if you turn on “Detect my runs”, the app uses “Always” location (significant moves and your usual starting spots, worked out on your iPhone from your runs; no continuous GPS) and your iPhone’s motion history to offer your coach when you’re running. If you turn on importing watch runs, new runs that land in Health (Garmin, Apple Watch…) join your history, just like a manual import. All of this stays on your iPhone and is sent to no one; only the imported runs are backed up to your account, like your other runs.

Data sent to third parties

AI services (with your permission)

The app asks for your permission once. You can withdraw it anytime in Settings › Coach. Requests go through our server (Supabase, EU), which relays them without keeping their content: it only keeps track of your coaching time and number of requests.

  • Claude, by Anthropic: to write the coach’s cues, briefing, summary and answers, the app sends your run stats (distance, pace, time, heart rate, zones, cadence), parts of your readiness (HRV, resting heart rate, sleep, VO2 max), your first name, the weather, the model and mileage of a pair of shoes that passes its wear threshold, your questions, what the coach remembers from your chats, any sore spot you report (area, intensity, since when, comeback check-ins), and the name, distance, elevation and streets of suggested or chosen routes. These requests carry an anonymous account identifier (not your email). Anthropic’s policy: https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
  • ElevenLabs: to speak the coach’s sentences with a natural voice, the app sends the text of those sentences. ElevenLabs’ policy: https://elevenlabs.io/privacy-policy

Without permission, nothing is sent to these services: the coach uses built-in phrases and the iPhone voice.

Hosting

Apple

  • App Store: in-app purchases are paid and processed by Apple, under its own terms and privacy policy. Apple notifies us of refunds (App Store Server Notifications).
  • DeviceCheck: see “Device identifier” above. https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/
  • Maps (MapKit): to build suggested loops, the app asks Apple for walking directions between your location and a few waypoints around it, looks up nearby parks and place names (reverse geocoding). These requests carry neither your name nor your account. https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/

Weather

  • Open-Meteo: for today’s weather, the app sends a location rounded to about 1 km; for the elevation of a suggested loop, the coordinates of a few dozen points along it. Nothing else. https://open-meteo.com

Retention and deletion

  • Your data is kept as long as your account exists.
  • Sign out (Settings › Account) erases the data from this iPhone; it stays in your account.
  • Delete my account (Settings › Account) permanently deletes your account and all your RunWay data from our servers (profile, runs, plan, coaching time, purchase history, referrals), and revokes Sign in with Apple if you used it. Any remaining coaching time is lost. If you also use Boost with the same email, the account remains for Boost, with no RunWay data. Anything in Apple Health stays there.
